OnePlus has unveiled a new product that could very well be in the running for the best budget Android smartphone of the year. The OnePlus X is here. And it is awesome!
The OnePlus X is the Chinese brand’s third product offering in the smartphone division. Following up to the incredible success of the OnePlus 2 is surely a daunting task but considering the OnePlus X’s specifications and pricing, OnePlus would like to believe that they have another winner on their hands.
The specs on the OnePlus X
The OnePlus X will be available in two variants – the Onyx and the Ceramic. The Onyx is the glass build with a metallic frame that will weigh 138 grams, while the limited edition Ceramic model will come with a ceramic backplate and will weigh 160 grams.
The OnePlus X boasts of a 5 inch full HD AMOLED display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC. The OnePlus X will run on 3GB RAM and will come packed with 16 GB internal storage that can be expanded up to 128 GB. This beauty of a smartphone comes with a 13MP primary camera and an 8MP front camera. The battery on the OnePlus X is an impressive 2525 mAh battery.
Other significant features on the OnePlus X include – a hybrid dual SIM slot which allows one of the two SIM slots to act as a microSD slot. The phone is also 4G capable and is powered by OxygenOS which is essentially built on Android Lollilop.

Now comes the OnePlus X’s wild card – it’s price. The OnePlus X Onyx will cost Rs. 16,999 while the OnePlus X Ceramic will set consumers back by Rs. 22,999. The OnePlus X Onyx will be available in India through OnePlus’ customary invite-only model on Amazon India from November 5th. The OnePlus X Ceramic, on the other hand, will be available from November 24th.
Will the OnePlus X’s price help it win the budget phone race?
Whether you like OnePlus’ previous offerings or not there is no denying that both of its products, the OnePlus One and the OnePlus 2, struck an instant cord with the consumers who were looking for an alternate in an Android ecosystem that was dominated either by super expensive devices, such as those from the Samsung brigade, or super inexpensive devices that weren’t quite good enough to spend one’s hard earned money on.

This is where brands such as Xiaomi and OnePlus have cashed in. They have launched products that are appealing to a segment of the market which likes to buy a new device every couple of years, in some cases even once a year, but doesn’t like spending a fortune on a phone. This is why the OnePlus 2 has been such a roaring success for OnePlus. Now the OnePlus X looks to take affordability+quality paradigm to a whole new level with amazing specifications made available to the consumers at prices that would surely qualify as “amazing” when the specifications themselves are taken into account.
The fact that the OnePlus X is strategically priced to compete with its rivals that are offering similar specifications at higher prices says a lot about the company’s ability to think out of the box and garner consumer and media attention at opportune moments. The OnePlus X’s price may not guarantee spectacular sales because there are a lot of other factors involved when it comes to the sale of a product, but it has certainly given the impetus, and I would argue the momentum going forward, to the OnePlus X when it finally becomes available to consumers in a week’s time.
