Xiaomi has become one of the most talked about smartphone companies in various parts of the world, especially India. The third quarter of 2016 has been its best so far with a 170% YoY growth in shipment sales.

Some time ago, Xiaomi was selling its smartphones only through online channels. However, the company has been focussing on offline channels of late. End result? The Chinese juggernaut has already ousted Micromax from the second position in the Indian smartphone market.

As for latest news pertinent to product launches, details regarding the successor to the Xiaomi Redmi 3 – the Xiaomi Redmi 4 – were spotted on the Chinese certification website Tenaa. Let us take a closer look at the features and specifications of the smartphone as seen on the said website.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 Specifications

Form Factor and Display

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 has a unibody design with the dimensions – 141.3 x 69.6 x 8.9 mm – and weighs 160 grams.

The smartphone has a 5-inch display, which offers a resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels.

Architecture, Memory, and Operating System

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is powered by a 2 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and an Adreno 506 GPU.

The device has 2 GB/3 GB of RAM and 16 GB/32 GB of internal memory, expandable via a microSD card.

As for the operating system, the device runs Xiaomi’s custom interface MIUI 8 on top of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Camera and Battery

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 has a 13-megapixel primary camera with LED flash. The secondary camera is a 5-megapixel shooter.

The device has a 4,000 mAh battery, which is pretty amazing considering its price tag.

Connectivity and Sensors

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is a dual-SIM (LTE + LTE) device with 4G and VoLTE support. Other connectivity features include GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth v4.2, GPS, and a 3.5-mm audio jack.

The sensors incorporated in the smartphone include a fingerprint scanner at the top-rear area and an infrared sensor.

The bigger cousin: Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 will be looking at some tight competition in the low-budget smartphone segment. Or will it? Its competitors will include models such as the Lenovo Vibe K5, Coolpad Mega 2.5D, LYF Wind 3, Alcatel OneTouch Idol X 6040D, and Asus ZenFone Go ZC500TG (8 GB). However, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 is offering some killer specifications for its price. To get some perspective, let us compare the smartphone with the Lenovo Vibe K5, which seems to be pretty popular among the masses.

With regard to camera and memory, the features of the Lenovo Vibe K5 are nearly identical to those of the Xiaomi Redmi 4. But when it comes to other critical features, the Lenovo Vibe K5 does not even come close. For example, its Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 415 is clocked much lower at 1.4 GHz. Its display resolution is average at 720 x 1280 pixels. Further, it does not incorporate a fingerprint scanner, and its battery capacity is only 2,750 mAh.

It is safe to say that upon release, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 will completely dominate the low-budget smartphone segment. The Chinese electronics manufacturer has been rather relentless with its product launches, and clearly, it has no plans to take a break.

Xiaomi’s ability to produce feature-packed smartphones at insanely affordable prices is laudable, to say the least. No wonder it has surpassed the likes of Lyf and Intex so quickly. Xiaomi will now be looking to dislodge Micromax to establish itself as one of the top three smartphone vendors in the highly competitive Indian market.

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is expected to be priced at 699 Yuan (about Rs. 7,000). It will be available in two color options – silver and gold. Xiaomi has not given out an official release date yet. However, reports are suggesting a November release.
