Apple Inc. has unveiled the Apple iPad Pro for the Indian market and as expected it is creating a ton of buzz already. When Apple started the Tablet revolution about half a decade ago very few would have thought that Tablets would become a mainstream device and that within 5 years the likes of Apple and Microsoft would be looking to take the Tablet space to an all new level where the Tablet eventually becomes the new notebook/laptop.

Well, we are in that moment in time today when that distinction has only just begun to blur. The two most powerful Tablet computers on the planet – Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and Apple iPad Pro – have been unveiled globally and one of them has already made its way into the Indian market.
Specifications – Apple iPad Pro
For a Tablet to be considered a notebook competitor one special feature has to be its screen size. Most regular Tablets are 7 inch and thereabouts but that’s nowhere close to the screen size of a regular notebook. The iPad Pro solves that problem. For a Tablet it has a massive 12.9 inch IPS LED display and has a pixel density of 264 ppi at a resolution of 2048×2732 pixels. The iPad Pro boasts of the latest Apple A9X processor, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB internal storage, which is not expandable, fingerprint sensor, 8 megapixel rear camera with autofocus, 1.2 megapixel front camera, standard connectivity options such as WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC, a 10,307 mAh Li-Ion battery. The device is powered by the iOS 9.

The specs look great for a Tablet in that class but the Apple iPad Pro is way more than just the hardware specs.
The focus is on ease of use
It’s important to identify the target audience for the iPad Pro. While it is easy to assume to that the iPad Pro may only be preferred by a certain segment of consumers who are hi-tech acquainted and want to try out new things, the fact remains that Apple’s overarching goal for the iPad Pro is to broaden this consumer space dramatically by appealing to all tech savvy consumer segments and not just the early adopters or the uber cool ones.

The thing about consumer adoption is that you can’t ask for it, instead you have to make it happen. So to make this a more widely acceptable product Apple Inc. has, as always, focused on making it an easy to use product. The two amazing accessories for the iPad Pro – the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard – are exactly what Apple needed to make it happen.

What these two companion products to the iPad Pro achieve is ease of use for the consumer. While both products have face a little bit of a flak for their availability and their ergonomics in the past, these are not arguments that diminish the usefulness of the accessories. The Apple Pencil is in itself a great product but not all iOS apps are optimized for it. What some naysayers fail to understand is that the app ecosystem isn’t controlled by Apple, it is only facilitated by Apple. Having said that all apps and companies which want to take advantage of the Apple Pencil will come forward and add support for it. Adobe has already done for Photoshop and others are working on it.

I will agree with the argument that the keyboard that ships with the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is way better ergonomically and design wise than Apple’s Smart Keyboard. But once again that doesn’t take away from the usefulness of the product. All it does is create a minor impediment which only takes a few hours, if not minutes, of practicing to get used to.
Overall, the Apple iPad Pro is a top notch product with all the bells and whistles required to be considered a potential notebook replacement in future, but I would argue that would have to be an iteration of this iPad Pro.

If Apple’s illustrious Co-founder Steve Jobs was around he would probably be reminding us that:
“It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”
