Coolpad has launched a new smartphone in India which isn’t exactly at par with what we have come to expect of Coolpad. It is above par. It exceeds all expectations that one has grown accustomed to from a Coolpad smartphone. The company has launched the new Coolpad Max. Let’s take a quick look at the specifications on the phone before we dive deeper into its pricing.

Specifications – Coolpad Max

The Coolpad Max comes with a 5.5 inch IPS display that has a pixel density of 401 ppi. It boasts of a 1.5 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor alongside an Adreno 405 GPU and a powerful 4 GB RAM. Even though there are better processors available in the market today one still has to applaud Coolpad for coming up with a high performance configuration such as that. Another important feature is the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection on the Coolpad Max’s screen.

The internal storage on the Coolpad Max is an impressive 64 GB. You can use a microSD card to add another 64 GB to the phone’s storage capacity.

The Coolpad Max has a 13 megapixel primary camera dual-tone LED flash, PDAF, and ISOCELL CMOS sensor. The secondary camera is a 5 megapixel unit. Those are some of the very best camera specifications ever put forward by Coolpad and they are extremely competitive specs indeed. However, the Coolpad Max is being launched at a price of Rs. 24,999 and for that price smartphone-camera enthusiasts (yes, there is such a breed of humans) can get way better configurations from other smartphone brands.

The point being that while this is a great improvement for camera specs on Coolpad phones, and it really is a good specification to be honest, it won’t have a certain section of the market very excited because there are other, and quite frankly better, options available to them.

It is no surprise that the dual SIM phone also supports 4G connectivity. One now expects all modern smartphones that aren’t entry level to boast of 4G connectivity. Though even that might be about to change in future as a number of brands are beginning to offer 4G enabled phones at cheaper and cheaper prices with every passing month.

The battery capacity on the Coolpad Max is a decent 2800 mAh, which allows for talktime of up to 17 hours and standby time of up to 310 hours, according to the company. Once again if one considers the pricing of the phone some sections of the market are likely to overlook the Coolpad Max if battery capacity is central to their buying decision. And there are a lot of people in India for whom this is an important specification.

The phone weighs a mere 175 grams, which isn’t too bad for its size and form factor. Last but not the least, the Coolpad Max is powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop OS and it uses the company’s very own Cool UI 8.0 to differentiate it from other Android UIs out there.

Why is the Coolpad Max priced Rs. 24,999?

That is actually quite a tricky question. It’s not complex maths and it doesn’t take a trigonometric equation to ascertain the reason for their pricing. That’s because those equations are irrelevant to pricing of products, which is exactly the point. The Coolpad Max is Coolpad’s attempt at offering a high-end smartphone and it to an extent it does achieve that goal.

The processing power on the phone will certainly be right up there with some of the best phones around. However, the rest of the specs don’t live up to the “high-end” phone definition. Some would argue there is no definition but in an age where 6 GB RAMs are beginning to become more commonplace, camera specifications are going through the roof, and battery technology is finally experiencing innovation jumps, Coolpad Max’s specs aren’t cutting edge. And there are cutting edge smartphones available for Coolpad Max’s price today.

I don’t want this to sound like a knock on the brand new device from Coolpad. It is an extremely cool phone to own and I would certainly recommend it if Coolpad slashed the price by Rs. 5,000. There is still no reason why you shouldn’t check out the new Coolpad Max. If you are okay with the pricing this is still a very good phone to own.
