Earlier this year in March we told you about the rumours that had the smartphone industry abuzz about Huawei’s latest flagship – Huawei P9. Well, it is time to move beyond the rumours because the Huawei P9 is coming to India. Let’s take a closer look at what the Huawei P9 has in store for us.
Specifications – Huawei P9
The Huawei P9 boasts of a 5.2 inch AMOLED display that has a screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. This is a 2.5D curved glass display and is therefore a pretty tough display to wreck, unless you are on a mission to wreck it. The phone comes with a 1.8 GHz Octa Core HiSilicon Kirin 955 processor alongside a T880-MP4 GPU. The P9 also boasts of a 4 GB RAM making it an extremely powerful performer.
The internal storage on the phone is 64 GB, which can be expanded up to 128 GB using a microSD card slot. That is a good internal storage capacity for a flagship phone in 2016. It is disappointing to see some of the top smartphone brands offering a maximum of 32 GB storage which is usually expandable up to 64 GB. Huawei certainly didn’t disappoint us on this front.

And now for the Huawei P9’s USP – it’s camera specification. The primary camera comprises of a dual 12 megapixel lens that supports dual-tone LED flash, HD video recording, and Phase Detection AutoFocus. The secondary camera is an 8 megapixel unit. The most important bit about the camera’s on the Huawei P9 is that they are Leica optics. Leica Camera AG is an iconic German camera enterprise that has been around for over 165 years and is renown for making high-quality camera equipment. Huawei has in fact stated that the P9 is all about Leica.
“For us P9 is not just a smartphone but an opportunity to collaborate with international brands. If Nexus 6P was all about Google, then P9 is all about Leica.”
– Allen Wang, President, Huawei Consumer Business Group (India) in conversation with IndianExpress.com
This is a novel idea by Huawei. While collaborating with international brands is not new, it is Huawei’s approach to collaboration that’s unique. There are a number of smartphone brands that are collaborating with some of the best camera equipment makers and producing stunning smartphone cameras but hardly anyone bills their entire flagship product to be all about the camera equipment brand.
Of course, Huawei has chosen the right brand. It had to be a brand as iconic as Leica for Huawei and Leica to pitch this idea to the consumers. For those of our readers in India who may not be camera enthusiasts, it is worth pointing out that Leica’s legacy is forever etched in modern technological and cultural history. Some of the greatest photographs of the last century have been on a Leica camera.
The Huawei P9 is a dual-SIM phone and supports 4G connectivity. The phone weighs 144 grams, which makes it a good lightweight carry. The battery capacity on the Huawei P9 is 3000 mAh. This is perhaps my only little disappointment with the P9. Battery tech on smartphones is rapidly improving and the likes of Gionee and Intex are pushing the boundaries of battery capacity on modern phones. So there is no reason why Huawei after having shipped the Huawei Nexus 6P, which was billed the phone of the year 2015, should not offer one of the best batteries in the market on its latest flagship product.
The P9 is powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS but Huawei uses its own user interface called the Emotion UI 4.1 to give users a new interface to play with. The Huawei P9 is expected to be available in India in July, 2016.
