Lenovo has slowly been building its brand across various device segments over the years and continues to push aggressively in huge consumer electronics markets like India. Well, all that effort seems to have paid off now. The Chinese multinational has overtaken HewlettPackard (HP) as India’s leading PC brand.

According to leading research firm Gartner, Lenovo’s PC shipments reached 25.3% of the total market in India. This is an increase of over 5% since December which meant that Lenovo posted its highest market share in India ever. HP, which was until now the leading PC brand in India thanks largely to growing demands for its Pavillion range of laptops, controlled more than a quarter of the market share in India in the year-ago period. HP had controlled 25.5% of the total market back then but its share has now fallen to 23.3%.
Dell Inc also saw a marked decline in its market share. About a year ago Dell controlled 24.1% of the market which is now down to 20.6%.
Lenovo moved into the number one position in PC shipment in India in the fourth quarter of 2015 due to the state government order execution in the quarter which helped Lenovo experience the largest increase in market share. – Gartner report.
Interestingly, Lenovo’s growth coincided with the growth of PC shipments in India. PC shipments reached 2.6 million by the end of the fourth quarter of 2015. This was a 10.6% increase year-over-year. Despite this increase Gartner said it did not see significant growth in the PC market in future.
The PC market in India is facing some challenging market dynamics. The enterprise segment might witness some growth going forward due to government and education projects, however, we do not foresee significant growth in the PC market in India.

Overtaking HP in India is a significant boost for Lenovo because globally Lenovo has been leading the way in PC shipments. Lenovo controls 20.3% of the global market share. HP follows it closely with 18.8%.
