Lenovo has unveiled the world’s first Google Project Tango enabled smartphone. It’s called the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro and it is expected to be launched globally in September. Let’s take a closer look at the specifications on the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro.
Specifications – Lenovo Phab 2 Pro
The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro comes with a massive 6.4 inch IPS display that has a screen resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and is essentially a 2.5D curved glass display. The Phab 2 Pro has an Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor alongside an Adreno 510 GPU. The phone also boasts of a 4 GB RAM, which when combined with the processors is sure to give the phone’s performance a fillip.
The internal storage on the phone is 64 GB, which can be expanded up to 128 GB via a microSD card slot. The primary camera on the Phab 2 Pro is a 16 megapixel unit which supports LED flash, PDAF, Depth sensor for Tango, and Motion Tracking sensor for Tango. The secondary camera is an impressive 8 megapixel unit.

This is a dual SIM phone that supports 4G connectivity. It weighs 259 grams, which is a bit on the higher side even after taking its form factor in to consideration. The battery capacity on the Phab 2 Pro is 4050 mAh. The battery supports fast charging. A phablet is expected to have a larger battery compared to a regular sized phone but then there are several 5 inch to 5.5 inch phones out there that boast of a better battery specification than the Phab 2 Pro. Maybe Lenovo could have done better on the battery front and I say maybe because despite this being a phablet 4050 mAh is not a bad battery spec at all.
The Phab 2 Pro is powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.
Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is a step forward for Augmented Reality
Google and Lenovo have worked together to bring the AR experience to a smartphone. The Phab 2 Pro is essentially the very first smartphone to tap in to the capabilities of AR. Project Tango uses depth sensing and motion tracking, among other things, to track position, movement, and measure the space around us. The Phab 2 Pro demonstrates how this works very well.
The Phab 2 Pro isn’t just a demo phone to try out AR experiences, it can do a whole lot more if the developer community gets behind it. There are already several very interesting and some extremely fun AR apps available on Google Play store that capture the Project Tango experience brilliantly but in order to take full advantage of the Project Tango based features of the Phab 2 Pro the developer community that works with Google will have to come up with more apps.

Despite the limited Tango based apps available as of now the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is definitely a step in the right direction for AR. While some companies are working on groundbreaking head mounted display technology and trying to blend AR with a number of wearable devices, AR on phone is also something that will need to be pursued if AR wants to impress the casual non-techie. The Phab 2 Pro is the first attempt at a mass market product that brings AR to the living rooms of regular people who may not necessarily be aware of the potential use cases of AR in their every day life.
