Micromax has launched an affordable smartphone with a 5.5 inch display and specifications that would be considered pretty good for a phone that costs less than Rs. 6, 200. Let’s take a closer look at the specifications on this phone.
Specifications – Micromax Canvas Fire 5
The Micromax Canvas Fire 5 comes with a 5.5 inch IPS display that has a screen resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. There is a 1.3 GHz Quad Core MediaTek MT6580 processor alongside a 1 GB RAM to help you perform tasks at a rapid pace. The internal storage on the phone is 16 GB, which can be expanded up to 32 GB via a microSD card slot.
The primary camera on the Canvas Fire 5 is an 8 megapixel unit which supports LED flash and autofocus, while the secondary camera is 5 megapixel. While the secondary camera specification is pretty much the standard specification for most smartphones these days, the primary camera may be lacking a few megapixels I think.
As has been the case with some of Micromax’s most recent product launches, the Canvas Fire 5 does not support 4G connectivity. Even one of their most recent announcements, the Micromax Canvas Selfie 4, was not a 4G phone. This is a bit of a surprise for us because Micromax has been at the fore front of pushing 4G connectivity in the Indian market for quite some time now.

They took the lead when no other Indian smarpthone brand was doing it and now we have almost everybody taking a liking to the 4G strategy. Does Micromax think they have overdone the 4G strategy or do they feel they need more 3G phones in the market? It’s hard to tell right now but it’s clear that at least in the low-budget price segment Micromax is currently willing to launch phones that aren’t 4G compatible, which is why the Canvas Fire 5 is a 3G phone.
The Canvas Fire 5 is a dual SIM phone with on SIM slot each for GSM and WCDMA. The battery capacity on the phone is 2500 mAh, which is a decent battery spec for a phone in this price bracket. The company claims that the Canvas Fire 5 will last up to 8.5 hours in talktime and up to 450 hours in standby time on a single full charge.
The multimedia aspect of the phone is greatly enhanced thanks to the dual front firing speakers and support for the Auro-3D sound technology which has proved to be a boon for the digital cinema industry. The Micromax Canvas Fire 5 is powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. So at least Micromax is not compromising on the best Android version even on low-budget phones.
Has Micromax’s image makeover campaign helped the company?
Not too long ago Micromax had started an image makeover campaign that I am sure they would prefer to refer to as a re-branding exercise. There was an all new Micromax anthem interestingly titled – ‘Nuts. Guts. Glory.’ However, re-branding exercises only work if you back up your extravagant, and sometimes impressive, marketing campaigns with not just quality products but products that differentiate themselves from an earlier portfolio, not dramatically but definitely. I am not entirely sure if that is the case with Micromax.
They are of course still producing good smartphones which is what they should always be focused on but at the moment it appears that the anthem was more of an attempt to divert attention from all the negative press that the company was getting earlier this year thanks to some members in its leadership team. And now that things have changed at the top, the company probably wants you to believe that the brand itself is embarking on a new journey through ‘Nuts. Guts. Glory.’ We will find out whether this has had any impact on their sales when quarterly financial results are revealed.
