A New Malware Affected Over 13 Lakh Android Smart Phones in India

Now days everyone is using high quality Android Devices such as Smart Phones, TV, Smart Wearables etc. When a user uses any Android Device then its a necessity to download several kind of utility apps and downloading these apps sometimes take Malware (Virus) along with them in the Android Device. In the recent past a Malware known as “HummingBad” affected over 10 Million Smart Phones worldwide. The fact which will frighten Indian Users is that, the second highest number of devices (13.5 Lakh Devices) was affected in India.

The Malware has now affected devices across 20 countries but the largest number of devices are in China and India. The highlights of this Malware includes, Worldwide 10 Million Devices Infected, 1.6 Million Devices are Infected in China, 1.35 Million Devices affected in India, Half number of the total affected devices runs on Android KitKat version and around 40% Affected Devices runs on Android JellyBean OS. Although all app stores claims that they provide secure apps but apps which bring HummingBad Malware into your android device are found in popular App Stores such as Google Play Store too.

The Malware was found in February. There is news that the group behind this Malware is “Yingmob” (A Chinese Mobile Ad Server Company). News also said that the team responsible for This Malware is a group of 25 persons and called “Development Team for Overseas Platform”. This Malware tries to get root access of the Device, then generates fraudulent ad revenue by installing fraudulent and malicious apps in the device. According to Malware check point, This Malware installs over 50000 fraudulent apps in a day, these installed apps shows over 20 million ads per day, this generates over 2.5 million clicks in a day which makes a revenue of $ 10000 per day for Yingmob which means $300000 per month.
