Ever since Steve Jobs introduced the original iPhone to the world in what is now regarded as an iconic product introduction, the smartphone industry has grown beyond what anyone could have imagined or predicted on that day. Not even the legendary Apple co-founder could have envisioned the future that we now live in leading up to that launch. But things have changed quite dramatically and Apple isn’t even the top smartphone maker in the world.

A number of brands have risen to the occasion and over the years have gone on to produce numerous smartphones that could wear the mantle of being the best smartphone in the world. As years have progressed it has become increasingly difficult to point out one smartphone that stands out from the rest. There are no losers in this business anymore. There are only winners who win with varying degree of successes.

2015 was no different. The year saw some amazing new hardware and vastly improved software advances being made in the smartphone industry. There were many great devices that took the world by storm but then there were some that just stood out neck and shoulders above the rest. Today we list the top 5 smartphones of 2015.

Before we begin let me just point out that these phones are not listed in an order of ranking and we are simply listing down the top 5 smartphones from 2015.

iPhone 6S

The Apple iPhone 6S is arguably Apple’s best iPhone ever. After the astronomical success of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Apple needed a product that could sustain the iPhone juggernaut. That was easier said than done, of course. It’s a little hard to follow the product which was largely responsible for a tech company recording the best quarter in corporate history. But that is exactly what Apple expected from the iPhone 6S.

While it remains to be seen whether the iPhone 6S accounts for another great Apple quarter, there is little doubt about the fact that the iPhone 6S has been another success story for Apple globally.

HTC One M9

The HTC One M9 has the most well balanced design, the most amazing premium look, feel, and finish, and is the most beautiful phone money can currently buy.

Much like the iPhone 6S, this device also had the pressure of filling up the shoes of an iconic device before it. The HTC One M8 was the best phone in the market on its launch day and it continued to be a roaring success throughout 2014. That is hard to beat but the fact that the HTC One M9 actually managed to top the design and specs on the HTC One M8 goes to show that the smartphone division at HTC is one of the most innovative teams out there.

If this phone had been launched in India 6 months ago there is little reason to doubt whether it would have sold out like a chocolate donut from Dunkin’ Donuts on a Christmas eve. It looks delicious and I am sure it would break a few records on its way to stardom in 2016.

LG G4

While LG doesn’t feature among the top 3 smartphone brands in the world as prominently as it would have liked, it does manage to deliver some amazing phones every year. The LG G4 beat most Android phones when it came to performance this year.

Some would argue that it is priced slightly higher than it should have been but we shouldn’t forget that it offer the amazing speed thanks to the 1.8 GHz 64-bit Hexa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor. Very few phones offer top-of-the-line 64-bit hexa core processors and a 3GB RAM to go with it.

I would recommend the LG G4 to everybody who wants a high quality phone but doesn’t want to go for an Apple or a Samsung device.

Samsung Galaxy S6

Speaking of Samsung, right at the beginning of 2015 there was a lot of debate about Samsung losing its market share to brands which catered to the local market and Samsung’s inability to stop the bleeding caused by this emerging trend from emerging markets, such as India.

So when the Galaxy S6 launched alongside its fancier cousin – the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge – the entire industry was wiling to bet Samsung’s survival or demise on this one product. While that was rather uncalled for it is true that the future of Samsung’s mobile division was in a bit of a disarray and its latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S6, had the potential to make or break Samsung’s mobile division.

The Galaxy S6 made it and brought Samsung a lot of lost goodwill and some much deserved praise.

Huawei Google Nexus 6P

Everybody who is aware of Huawei’s excellent hardware capabilities and design understanding was delighted when Google decided to let Huawei work on its latest Nexus phone. The Huawei Nexus 6P was the highlight of Google’s year in the mobile space.

The Huawei Nexus 6P with its 2 GHz Octa Core processor and with the advantage of being the first to receive Android updates on a pure Google phone held its ground against all the giants of the industry. The Nexus 6P came with Google’s latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS and this brilliant software coupled with great hardware made for an irresistible combination.

If you ask me, the Nexus 6P was the Android smartphone of the year, if not the smartphone of the year.
