Here are the specs on the Xiaomi Mi 5, based on what we know so far.
Rumored specifications – Xiaomi Mi 5
The Xiaomi Mi 5 has been rumored to have either a 5.5 inch IPS LCD display or a 5.2 inch QHD display. The phone is also expected to have a 2.5 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and could come in 3 GB and 4 GB options. There could be as many as 3 variants of the Xiaomi Mi 5. This are likely to be the 16 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB variants.

The phone will also sport a 20 megapixel rear camera and an 8 megapixel front camera. However, the second leak hints at a 16 megapixel rear camera and a 13 megapixel front camera. In terms of battery, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is likely to have either a 3800 mAh battery or a 3600 mAh battery.
Do the two separate leaks point towards 2 separate Xiaomi Mi 5 phones?
While leaks about smartphone specs have become increasingly common, it rarely happens that the specs of the same phone are leaked twice with a varying degree of difference. So do these two separate leaks actually point towards two separate variations of the Xiaomi Mi 5? We believe this could very well be the case.

Judging by the variance in specs it is plausible to assume that Xiaomi could be launching two variants of the Mi 5, the first with a 5.5 inch display and 3 GB RAM, while the second could be a phone with a 5.2 inch display and a 4 GB RAM. But if this is indeed a plausible scenario that begs the question – why would Xiaomi launch the Mi 5 in two screen sizes? I would argue that this could actually mean that instead of two Mi 5s, Xiaomi could possibly be planning on launching the Mi 5i alongside the Mi 5.
It is known that Xiaomi has previously chosen to introduce a cheaper cousin of the Mi 4, which is its current flagship, and that device was the Xiaomi Mi 4i mobile. But then again, despite the notable differences in specs, these are just speculations.

Why has the Xiaomi Mi 5’s much awaited launch been so delayed?
Interestingly, the Xiaomi Mi 5 will not be the first smartphone to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. Reports suggest that Samsung has an exclusive deal with Qualcomm which prevents other brands from launching a phone powered by this chipset until April, 2016. If these reports are correct and the Xiaomi Mi 5 actually sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor then we may have to wait for the Mi 5 until April-May of 2016.

This makes us wonder why companies would opt to use a particular SoC for their product if it known that the product’s shipping date would be delayed in case the SoC is under a contract with another smartphone manufacturer. If Samsung does have a contract with Qualcomm and Xiaomi, or any other brand decides to use the same SoC for their product, it is safe to assume that these terms would be known to all parties.
Perhaps Xiaomi is comfortable waiting for the extra few months and wants to use the best SoC available in the market for their product, which will surely make for a quality product. But in a smartphone market which is as highly saturated as the current markets of China and India, timely product launch is key to not losing market share to other brands.
Other than the leaked images and specs, an alleged leaked video of the Xiaomi Mi 5 is also doing the rounds on the Internet. Here is the leaked video shared by Sami Luo.
