Mi Max

Xiaomi is back in the news and for all the right reasons. The Chinese start-up which has seen a lot of ups and a few downs in the last couple of years has come up with a 6.44 inch device that the company still prefers to refer to as a “smartphone” and not a “phablet”. The Xiaomi Mi Max is here.

Specifications – Xiaomi Mi Max

As noted previously the display on this phone is huge. The phone comes with a 6.44 inch IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 342 ppi and screen protection from Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The Mi Max comes in 3 variants. The first one boasts of a 1.8 GHz Hexa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor with a 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage. The second is a 64 GB variant with 1.8 GHz octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor and 3 GB RAM. The third variant is a 128 GB model with 4 GB RAM and the Snapdragon 652 processor.

The primary camera on the Mi Max is 16 megapixel with PDAF while the secondary camera is a 5 megapixel unit with an 85 degree wide angle view. The dual-SIM phone supports all standard connectivity options including 4G. Perhaps one of the most interesting specs on the Mi Max is the 4850 mAh battery capacity. That is a large battery for any phone but for a bigger phone it becomes a little more accommodating and feasible to ship better batteries.

The Mi Max also has an infra red port and comes with the Mi Remote app that allows consumers to control appliances from a large number of brands. The phone is powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

Xiaomi also launched the MIUI 8 at the same event

Xiaomi launched the latest version of its ROM, the MIUI 8 alongside the Mi Max. This is a pretty significant development for the large MIUI community worldwide as Xiaomi is tweaking the interface and allowing for more customized content from its partners. The MIUI 8 developer ROM will support the following devices – Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 4c, Mi 4s, Mi 5, and Mi Max. The company went on to add that entire Redmi series and Mi Note series will support MIUI 8 developer ROM.

Why does Xiaomi opt to go for a big screen smartphone?

Xiaomi has a pretty diverse portfolio of products. This holds true not just for the other electronic products that the company builds but also for the smartphone portfolio. The company provides everything from a world class flagship smartphone to a top notch Tablet range. So the question on a few people’s minds is why did Xiaomi see the need for a big screen smartphone? This is being debated quite a bit in the tech circles right now. Well, I would argue that the answer to that can be derived from a pretty simple analysis.

Xiaomi offers smartphones and Tablets in a variety of screen sizes and almost all its products are popular in the mass markets of India and China. The company also offers a couple of low-budget smartphones with a lesser screen size compared to that of its flagships.

Xiaomi-Mi-Max

It’s not hard to see that the only thing Xiaomi’s smartphone portfolio lacked is a phablet that would let the company tap into the market segment where consumers prefer a screen size that is bigger than the usual 5.5 inch devices but not quite as big as a 7 inch Tablet.

From the looks of it the Xiaomi Mi Max seems like a great new offering from one of the world’s most talked about start-ups.
