Alcatel is a French company which is known for manufacturing mid-range or basic phones. Company features a large screen of 5-inch which provide full HD fun. It is a slim phone and initially launched in 5 different colors. The phone gives a good competition to most of the mid-range phones available in market. This experimental release from Alcatel needs to be tested for its different features and performance in order to give a final verdict about it.

Features and Specifications

The phone is quite light about 130g. The 5-inch large screen comes up with 16M colors. The screen is scratch protective and provides multi-touch facility as well. It is little extended in RAM and RAM here is 2GB while the internal storage is 16GB but this cannot be extended to 32GB with the help of microSD card. The back camera is having larger resolution and is of 13.1MP having many features like geo tagging, face detection and touch focus along with LED light. The front camera is 2.1MP and nicely used for fallacies. The OS is an Android v4.2.1 Jelly bean which is indeed an old OS and the processor provided to it is 1.5GHz quad core. Battery life for this mobile is 2000mAh Li-ion. The connectivity options are also tremendous including GPRS, Bluetooth, EDGE, microUSB and 2G/3G.

Design and Quality

Often mid-range smartphone ignore the design feature and more concentration is given to the performance. But the Alcatel Idol X 6040D has given full attention to the design along with other features. The phone is much slimmer than many big names in the market and is considered as the most compact large screen phone. The back of the phone is made up of soft touch plastic and is comfortable in holding and provides a perfect grip. This gives the phone premium look unlike the normal plastic made phone. The viewing angles of the screen are nice ad edges of the phone are nicely curved along with beautiful placement of all buttons on top and sides.

OS and Tech

The OS though is an old one but the support of 2GB RAM and 1.5GHz processor makes it a perfect match for the device and there is no apparent performance a lag being observed by now but an upgrade to the OS is recommended in order to make the performance of the phone flawless.

Camera and Multimedia

Though the back camera is 13.1MP but it is surprising that it can only capture pictures with only up to 9MP. The picture quality is not very impressive. The autofocus feature doesn’t work as efficiently as it has to be. Even in average equality picture, the colors are quite prominent and look very natural. Without LED light, the pictures taken are quite blurry but LED does its job fantastically and gives full support to the camera under low light conditions. The front camera works fine for selfies but the details here are missing for the pictures it captures. The video recording is also of moderate quality and the blurredness and shakiness of videos are very much prominent.

Battery and Memory

The battery life of the Alcatel one Touch Idol X 6040D is out of competition. It doesn’t even stand for whole day even under moderate use. Though the company claims to have provided about 20hrs of talk time and 12hrs of standby time under this battery but this has not been successfully tested. Only negligible battery loss is observed when the phone is completely idle. So the battery here is a complete weakness. The RAM has been enhanced and has been raised to 2GB which is a plus and the internal storage is restricted to only 16GB without being given any further extension but this much memory should be sufficient for an average user. For heavy mobile users, this much memory would also be a negative point about the phone.

Verdict

Users may get excited by the slim design of Alcatel Idol X 6040D, dual SIM property and a stunning screen. The overall performance of the phone is decent but not of high quality. The OS is though old but it is backed fully with the powerful processor and upgraded RAM. The camera is mediocre. The device sometimes is hard to be used especially while inserting the SIM card it requires little effort. Quick recharging may also exhaust user and will prefer to go other phone having good battery life. Battery should at least stand for one day. Many users call this invention a failed attempt due to poor battery life.
