Features and Specifications

The screen is too large of 5.5-inch with LCD display. It is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core processor. It is a Dual SIM phone but both SIMs has to be nano sized. It comes with two cameras, 13MP camera at the rear and 5MP camera at the front. It has 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage and the memory is extendible to scale it up to 32GB through microSD card slot. The OS it operates on is Android v4.4.2 KitKat. There are different connectivity features like 2G/3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microUSB support. The battery life it provides is 2600mAh Li-ion.

Design and Quality

The first noticeable thing about this phone is its large size. The phone is quite big having large screen of 5.5-inch along with all plastic body. This much size makes quite a large number of phones very small. The corners of the phone are rounded and the speakers are front facing and the speakers have large holes and it does look very decent. The bezels are quite large all around the screen. The HTC logo is placed at the bottom and the front camera is located at the front top left corner. The back camera and the LED flash are located at the top left corner at back side with a logon of HTC. The power button is located at top left spine. The size of the phone makes its handling difficult for single hand. The volume rockers are at the bottom of the power button. Even at much higher the 3.5mm headphone jack is located. The microUSB port is located at the bottom. The nanoSIM port and microSD card slot are placed at right side under plastic flip. It seems the phone is fingerprint proof as there has not been a single complaint about this issue. The size of the phone is indeed heavy of 158g.

OS and Tech

The OS it operates on is Android v4.4.2 KitKat having Sense 6 technology over it. Though some compromises have been observed while its operation but it is fair enough to digest it. The software keys in it have replaced the hardware buttons require the swiping up at the screen in order to bring them to front. The Blinkfeed has been improved and is still the main focus point in this mobile. Apps are same as provided on many other phones like One Mini2 and in addition to this, it has navigation software while using the phone during driving. The internal storage is less enough to hold all apps but through memory extension, apps can be installed on external storage as well and it works the similar way as on internal storage.

Camera and Multimedia

The dual camera having larger capabilities is also an interesting feature about this phone. It has 13MP large rear camera and a 5MP bigger front camera. Both of the cameras are capable enough to record videos in full HD. The condition of camera under normal light condition is of good quality and it does leave back few of its competitors in camera performance. In low light, the camera makes good struggle to make a good focus but the sensor is slow in action and the pictures get some noise in them. The same problem is with video recording and generates blurry videos and the performance is not of good quality.

Battery and Memory

The battery provided here is 2600mAh which is non-removable. Though the battery is not very impressive but it does provide Power saving modes and much larger power reservation modes as well. It is good in normal operations like browsing, streaming and gaming. If the brightness is set to lower, this can be used for extended hours for videos. The RAM it comes with is 1GB along with 8GB internal memory but this storage can be extended to quite enough space of 32GB using microSD card slot.

In the competition market of mid-range smartphone, HTC Desire 816 is a well-balanced phone between price and functionalities. Here HTC have showed its strength by launching this phone and it does try to compromise on many point quite efficiently that it is hardly noticed. This phone really gives a good value to user investment.
