The Zen Ultrafone 506 has a 5 inch screen with a resolution of 540x960 pixels, giving the phone pixels per inch of 220. The phone is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek Quad Core Processor alongside 1GB of RAM. The handset has an internal storage capacity of 4GB, which can be expanded with the use of a microSD card up to a size of 32GB. The Ultrafone 506 also boasts two strong cameras, a front facing 1.3MP camera and a rear facing 8MP camera, with an LED flash. The battery capacity is a considerably large 2100 mAh, and the phone has a range of connectivity capabilities including Dual Sim, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. It also runs Android’s latest OS, v4.4.2 Kit Kat.

Design and Quality

The Zen Ultrafone 506 is available in either white or black, and is very well designed. It weighs 129g and is made from glossy plastic. There are three capacitive buttons along the bottom of the screen. The speaker and front facing camera are located on the top of the screen. On the top of the phone is the 3.5mm audio jack and USB port. The volume buttons are on the left hand side and the power button is on the right. The rear of the phone has the main camera and flash.

OS and Tech

The phone operates with Android’s newest OS, the v4.4.2 Kit Kat. This, like all Android OS’s is highly customisable, and very intuitive and easy to use. Users are able to pick and choose from a range of themes, screensavers, homepage layout and widgets. This OS can have performance issues with some lag on lower performance phones, but the quad core processor should be able to cope in the majority of cases.

Camera and Multimedia

The Zen Ultrafone 506 has two cameras. A 1.3MP camera on the front, which is more than sufficient for video calls, and the occasional selfie. The main camera is a very nice 8MP with an LED flash. This camera is able to take video in 720p at 30fps. The phone has several multimedia capabilities including photo viewer, video viewer and FM radio.

Battery and Memory

The battery in the Zen Ultrafone 506 has a capacity of 2100 mAh, which is larger than most. This battery will comfortably last for more than a day use under normal use. Heavier usage, like with video watching, will reduce this considerably. There's 4GB of internal storage built in to the phone. This will be enough for some users, but not most. Fortunately this internal storage can be increased by adding a microSD. This can be up to 32GB in size, and should be more than enough for your photos, apps and videos.

Verdict

The Zen Ultrafone 506 is a well designed smartphone with good specifications. Due to its placement in the smartphone market it is placing itself in direct competition with several phones with better specifications for RAM and the front facing camera like the Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia Lumia 630. Despite these two factors, the phone is still very good value for money, and a user would not be disappointed.
