Obi mobiles, a company cofounded by a former Apple CEO has begun its operations in India. They aim to bring superior technology at inferior prices and they are focusing on the mid-range smartphone market. As part of their vision, they have come up with their brand new phone. Aimed at the ever growing Indian middle class, the dual SIM phone powered by a 1 GHz dual core processor with 1 GB RAM surely packs a punch with its top class features and specifications.

Features and Specifications

Let’s begin with the screen and display. Obi Fox S453 has a 4.5 inch long FWVGA IPS capacitive touchscreen display. The TFT display can show up to 16 million different colours at a resolution of 854X480 pixels. In terms of connectivity, the phone is Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and USB enabled. It supports 2G and 3G networks and has EDGE & GPRS technology. It has a 3.5 mm audio jack. It also contains a proximity and gravity sensor.

Design and Build

The phone with a screen size of 4.5 inches with dimensions measuring 131.7X64X9 mm. The 9 mm thick phone weighs at just 118 g. Its lightweight is certainly an advantage over most of its competitors. The Fox S453 has a curved body with rounded corners. Its front panel has three external navigation buttons at the bottom. On the top, there is the front camera lens and the proximity sensor. The back panel has the primary camera lens just above the LED flash light bulb. The obi logo in silver-grey is in the middle. The side panel has the power and volume control keys. The phone comes in only white colour. The phone looks sleek and classy and is comfortable to hold.

OS and Tech

The Obi phone packs power with its 1 GHz MT6572 dual core processor that is efficient in handling all the performance needs of the phone. A RAM of 1 GB keeps the multitasking limitations at bay. It is dual SIM phone where one SIM is required to be a mini SIM while the other must be a micro SIM. The phone employs android v4.4 KitKat as its OS. KitKat has proved to be a worthy successor to Jellybean and has delivered exceptionally on smartphones of all types.

Camera and Multimedia

A 5 MP primary camera has been provided at the rear which records videos and clicks pictures at a resolution of 2592X1944 pixels. The camera has an LED flash, digital zoom and autofocus. The secondary camera is of 2 MP without flash capabilities. The phone camera is average to say the least. The phone supports audio and video playback along with FM Radio playback. It can play both MP3 and polyphonic ringtones. SMS, MMS and Email facilities have been provided.

Battery and Storage

A Li-ion battery of 1600 mAh capacity has been installed in the phone. The battery has a standby time of 180 hours with a talk time of 360 minutes. Under normal usage, the battery may not last a full day which is a bit of a disappointment. In the memory department, the 1 GB RAM phone has got 4 GB internal memory space which is the norm nowadays. An external microSD card slot has been provided so that the external memory is expandable up to 32 GB to store your precious memories.The phone performs up to expectations in the memory department.

Obi has brought out a phone that does well in its price segment. But there is nothing unique about it and most of the features that it has provided are kind of a norm these days in this price range. Since it a new company, it can find customer loyalty a tough nut to crack. It is bound to face some stiff competition from phones like Xiaomi Redmi 1s, Lava Iris 350M and Fly Qik. The phone can be bought for its high performance abilities, its light weight and a nice display. But it severely lacks in the camera and battery department. For those who wish their phones last longer, there are better phones in the market to look at.
