HTC DESIRE 820G+: Dual Sim Octa Core Android Phone from HTC with 13MP Camera
HTC is a very famous mobile manufacturer and does not need any introduction. It famously went up against Samsung many times in the past with the HTC One X being the rival for Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One for the Samsung Galaxy S4. The HTC Desire 820G+ can be described as a mid level Smartphone with many great features that will appeal too many used to high level phones. Dual sim functions in foreign brands are always well appreciated in the local market since the makers are big names and quality is always suspected to be top notch along with performance. Below we will see how the HTC Desire 820G+ performs compared to its predecessor the HTC Desire 816.
Features and Specifications
The screen is the same on this phone as it is on the Desire 816 with a 5.5inch 1280 x 720 resolution (HD 720p) Super LCD2 display that is provided protection by Gorilla Glass 3. The phone has front facing speakers that utilize BoomSound technology. The camera is 13MP, same as the one on Desire 816, but the front camera is 8MP which is more than the Desire 816. The handset is powered by a 64bit Snapdragon 615 chip, an Octacore Cortex A53, 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 405 Graphics Chip. The phone uses Android as its OS with version 4.4.2 KitKat installed but with an available update to v5.0 Lollipop.
Design and Quality
The HTC Desire 820G+ has a nice slim design at just 7.7mm although the 13MP camera does protrude from the back since it is so big. Some people might even find that it gets in the way when they use the phone. One other issue with the phone is that it is prone to smudging especially the camera. The materials are mixed with the top and bottom parts made from a matte plastic while the rest uses a smudge prone glossy material. The phone has a sturdy feel despite using plastic and even though he design choices keeps it away from the premium look that is ok since it is supposed to be a mid level device anyway. It comes in 9 colors which areTuxedo Grey, Milky-way Grey, Santorini White, Tangerine White, Flamingo Grey, Saffron Grey, Blue Misty, Monarch Orange and Marble White.
OS and Tech
We already disclosed above that the device uses Android as it OS choosing to go with V4.4.2 KitKat which is not a bad thing as this version was the most well received and performing one. Good news is that the OS can be updated to v5.0 Lollipop with OTA firmware update which will grant users access to a host of new features. The Octacore processor performs really well especially when it has access to 2GB of RAM to help out. The device has a separate chip which is the Adreno 405 to bear the brunt of any gaming activities and it performs great as well.
Camera and Multimedia
The 13MP camera feels identical to the one used in the Desire 816 but that is no issue since it was a great performer. One drawback to it is that has a 4:3 sensor so if you take 16:9 landscape photos you will lose some resolution. It does have LED flash for taking photos in less than optimal lighting conditions. The front camera is 8MP and has no flash support but takes great selfies (dedicated selfie mode) and HD videos. A great plus point for selfie lovers is the dedicated selfie mode where you can turn on the smile capture and adjust make up levels which digitally makes you prettier. Multimedia wise this phone does not have well performing app built in so it would be better off with downloaded software from Play Store.
Battery and Memory
The phone has just 2600mAh of battery life which is what most people would describe as modest. This is probably why it manages just 22hrs and 40mins of taktime and 424hrs of standby time both in 3G mode. It is not a good score for endurance of battery life but you can improve it somewhat using the two power saving modes. The handset has 16GB of built in memory but can be increased using a MicroSD card of up to 128GB while the 2GB RAM is just great since it keeps the device performance very snappy and prevents most freezes due to low memory.
Pros and Cons
For Pros:
· Dual Sim
· 3G and 4G support
· 13MP camera
· 8MP front camera with great selfie options
· Front facing speakers
· Octacore
· Upgradeable to Lollipop
For Cons:
· Material is very prone to smudges
· Some people will not like the big camera at the rear
· Battery capacity is too low
Verdict
Looking at the spec sheet we can honestly say this is a great phone just by features alone. Selfies lovers will love it unconditionally and people into photography will love the 13MP camera results as well. Granted the design issues like the smudge prone material and camera placement are an issue but can be overlooked in favor of the many great features. Rivals Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo and Sony Xperia M4 Aqua will give it a great fight for market position however and in the end it will all depend on what the user wants. An all-rounder phone with great selfie features is the selling point of this phone so users looking for that will be very pleased with the HTC Desire 820G+.
