Jolla was founded in 2011 in Finland. Jolla produces smart phones that use a Linux-based Sailfish operating system. This independent OS is gesture based and promises to keep you hooked once you get the hang of it. Jolla is a small organization with around 150 developers on board. Jolla mobiles claims to be an ecosystem in itself with its own hardware, independent Sailfish OS and harbour.jolla.com website created for developing and selling applications.
Here are two devices by Jolla:
1. Jolla Mobile Phone: The Jolla Mobile phone was released in Finland on 27th November 2013. First things first! The operating system. Jolla mobiles comes with its own gesture based independent Operating System called Sailfish. The user interface is gesture based which has been developed using HTML5, Qt and QML. Jolla phones are also capable of running most Android applications through a compatibility layer called Alien Dalvik.
The smartphone has a 4.5 inch screen with an IPS qHD display. The resolution is 540 x 960 pixels. The processor is dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 running at 1.4 GHz. The primary camera is 8 MP with LED flash and secondary camera is 2 MP. The headphone jack is standard 3.5mm. The device has 16GB storage memory and a 1 GB RAM. The phone comes with a 2100 mAh battery which is good enough for a phone with a 4.5 inch screen.
2. Jolla Tablet: Say hello to the first crowd sourced tablet. The Jolla Tablet was announced in November 2014 and will be released in May 2015. It will be the first tablet running on the Linux Sailfish Operating System. The Jolla tablet sports a 7.85 inch IPS screen with a 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution. The multi touch has a capacity of recognizing up to 5 touch points. The tablet has a 64 bit Z3735F processor by Intel. It is Quad core and runs at 1.8GHz. The GPU is Intel HD Graphics and RAM is 2GB. The tablet comes with a whopping 32 to 64GB internal memory. The external memory is expandable up to 128 GB which was Jolla mobiles’ primary goal. The battery is quite good at 4450 mAh. Jolla community has tried to include the user community as early as possible in the building process to create exactly what users want. The current introductory price of the tablet is $189.
Overall Review:
It is evident that Jolla is trying to solve all the current problems with the available tablets. Jolla is giving extremely high importance to the user’s privacy. Sailfish is a completely independent Operating System and is open source. Jolla promises to never share or sell any information that it possesses. The most notable features are Jolla’s newly developed capability of providing a tablet with 128 GB internal memory and creating the Split screen. This will allow the user to view and use two apps simultaneously. Jolla is certainly a smart device manufacturer that other companies need to be worried about. The features are exceptional and the cost price is affordable. The tablet will be released in India in May 2015.
